Highlights of the Holiday Season

When you visit Vienna during the holiday season, you’ll quickly see why the city is so special at this time of year. Between historic architectureclassical music, and thousands of sparkling lights, Vienna creates an atmosphere that feels truly unique.

These are the experiences that make a winter trip to Vienna worth it:

The Christmas market at Rathausplatz

It’s the heart of the season – huge, crowded, and absolutely magical. The mix of sparkling lights, a towering tree, mulled wine stands, and an ice rink captures the full spirit of Christmas. Go on a weekday in the late afternoon, just as the lights come on, before the evening crowds take over.

When the city lights up

In mid-November, Vienna officially switches on its holiday lights – a moment led each year by the Mayor of Vienna and watched by thousands. The most impressive spot is the Graben, where chandeliers sparkle above the street, while the Kärntner Straße and Kohlmarkt glow in warm gold tones and the Rotenturmstraße shines with its signature red ornaments. If you’re here when the lights are first switched on, don’t miss it.

The Christmas market at Schönbrunn Palace

Enjoying a cup of punch with a view of the imperial palace is about as Viennese as it gets. During the day the atmosphere is relaxed, and in the evening the illuminated palace backdrop and soft Christmas music create a calm, festive mood.

Music throughout the city

Whether it’s a concert in St. Stephen’s Cathedral, a classical performance in the Karlskirche, or a street musician downtown – music is part of Vienna’s character. Even in the middle of the bustle, it’s worth pausing for a few minutes just to listen.

The days leading up to Christmas

Vienna feels charged with anticipation and excitement. The streets are busy, yet beneath the rush there’s a calm sense of expectation. Take an evening walk on December 23, watch the lights shimmer, and you’ll feel that Christmas is just around the corner.

💡 Tip: For the best balance of atmosphere and space, plan your visit between mid-November and mid-December. Everything is in full swing, but the city hasn’t yet reached its busiest point.

Christmas Markets in Vienna

During the holiday season, Vienna turns into a sea of lights, music, and the scent of punch. All over the city, markets open their doors – some large, some small, some traditional, others more modern. Each has its own charm, and that’s exactly what makes them so special.

If you only have a few days in Vienna, focus on the markets that truly capture the city’s festive spirit:

  • Rathausplatz: The classic Vienna Christmas experience. Between the giant tree, ice rink, and endless lights, you’ll find the full holiday atmosphere – crowded, yes, but absolutely beautiful.

  • Schönbrunn: Elegant, calm, and set against a backdrop no other market can offer. Perfect for the afternoon or early evening.

  • Am Hof & Freyung: Two markets in the heart of the city, just a few steps apart. Handcrafted goods, good punch, and often live music.

  • Altes AKH: A local favorite – relaxed, family-friendly, with warm lighting and a cozy, authentic feel.

The Christmas markets are the heart of Vienna’s holiday season – without them, the city wouldn’t feel the same.

Christmas Through a Child’s Eyes

For adults, the weeks before Christmas are usually one thing above all: stressful. A quick punch here, a Christmas party there, and in between a last-minute gift to buy.

But while we rush from one thing to the nextchildren see this time in a completely different way – for them, it’s the beginning of the most magical weeks of the year.

Everywhere the lights are shining, the air smells of cinnamon and sugar, and the anticipation of Santa Claus grows day by day. In Vienna, this sense of wonder is truly cherished – and there are plenty of ways for families to experience it together.

Of course, the Christmas markets are at the heart of the Advent season.
And there’s plenty here for kids too: ice rinks, carousels, craft booths – everything that makes the wait for Christmas a little more exciting.
If you’d like to know which markets are especially worth visiting, take a look at my article Vienna’s Best Christmas Markets 2025 for all the key information.

But there’s also a lot to discover beyond the markets. At the ZOOM Children’s Museum in the MuseumsQuartier, you can get hands-on, create, and explore together. At the Haus des Meeres, you’ll find a small underwater world filled with sharks, colorful fish, and tropical creatures – the perfect place to warm up on a chilly winter day.

During Advent, many of Vienna’s theaters and concert halls host special performances for families.
You might see a modern fairy tale at the Theater der Jugend, a festive musical at the Volksoper Wien,
or a family concert at the Musikverein – a lovely way to get into the holiday spirit together.

And if you’re looking for a quiet moment amid all the festive lights, visit the Nativity Exhibition at Peterskirche – a place full of tradition and warmth, peaceful, moving, and truly special year after year.

Christmas Concerts in Vienna

When you experience Vienna during the Christmas season, you’ll quickly notice one thing: music takes center stage.

Few cities have so many churches, concert halls, and orchestras so close together – and none sound quite like Vienna at Christmas. Whether it’s soft choral musicgrand classical concerts, or traditional carols, the season here becomes a stage where history, culture, and atmosphere blend perfectly.

A highlight of the season is Christmas in Vienna at the Wiener Konzerthaus – a festive concert featuring international soloists and the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra. It takes place every year just before Christmas and is one of the city’s most popular holiday traditions.

In St. Stephen’s Cathedral*, the weeks before Christmas are also all about music. The Advent concerts with choir, orchestra, and candlelight create some of the most moving moments of the season.

If you love baroque settings, head to Karlskirche. Regular classical performances are held here – most notably Vivaldi’s - Four Seasons*, which sound especially powerful in this unique atmosphere.

The Christmas Market Am Hof is where Viennese craftsmanship meets city-center flair. Many of the vendors are certified artisans who work year-round in Vienna and the surrounding regions – from glassblowers to goldsmiths. If you’re looking for authentic, locally made gifts, this is the place to find them.

When it comes to food and drinks, there’s plenty to enjoy: alongside Käsespätzle and winemaker’s punsch, you can even raise a glass at the Champagne bar – a wonderful contrast where Viennese decadence meets rustic comfort. As you wander across the square in the evening and the golden lights shimmer above the stalls, you’ll feel that unmistakable mix of elegance and coziness that makes Christmas time in Vienna so special.

Christmas Eve in Vienna

When the shops close at noon, the city grows noticeably quiet – for a few hours, Vienna belongs to the families.

Many restaurants remain closed in the evening, so it’s best to book well in advance if you’re planning a festive dinner.

A few selected restaurants and hotels open their doors especially for this evening and offer special Christmas menus:
